Contacting Your Car Insurance Provider After an Accident
Nobody likes getting into an accident but they happen every day and so it's something that everyone has to deal with at some point. When you do get into an accident it's nice to have insurance in place so that you know you'll be covered. Calling your insurance provider once you're in an accident is something that most people don't have much experience with, unless you're exceptionally prone to accidents.
All of the major companies have special numbers to call in the event that you get into an accident. You don't want to hesitate when calling your car insurance company. Of course if it's a serious accident call 911 first. Once you're sure that everyone is OK you can call them so that they can guide you through the process. You're not the kid that hit the baseball through your house's window, so don't be bashful, and don't feel bad or guilty that you got into an accident, even it was your fault. Car insurance is in place to protect from all accidents, not just ones you didn't cause.
And don't get too upset because you think your premiums are going to go up because of the accident. Many of the bigger insurance companies forgive your first accident so you wouldn't see any increase in your rate unless this is not your first crash. If that's the case you still shouldn't get too upset, because at least you still have your health, and it probably won't increase as much as you think it will. Either way, getting upset or frustrated about the situation will only make it worse.
Many times an auto insurance agent can be the calm and assuring voice you need after an accident. They will keep things organized and make sure that you don't miss any steps in filing the claim. If you have to go to the hospital or have any physical ailments you'll want to tell your insurance company right away so that they can document it in the system. If you try to say that an ache or pain was caused by the accident and it's days or weeks later you will have a tough time proving the connection if you didn't mention anything on the day of the accident.
Just remember to keep your cool after an accident. Many times emotions run high and you can end up making the process more difficult by treating the insurance rep rudely. They are there to help, and they're also there to limit how much the insurance company has to pay. You don't want to treat them like the enemy, but you also don't want to pay for things that they should be paying for. Be firm, but respectful and everything will work out for you.
